A 7-year-old girl jumped from a moving vehicle as a carjacker fled and her mother clung to the trunk Tuesday morning, police said.
Police say the 24-year-old woman left her Nissan Altima idling outside the Kids Corner Daycare and Learning Center in the 3900 block of South Polk Street in central Oak Cliff about 7:30 a.m. where she was dropping off her son.
The mother and another woman ran out as a man in a white hooded sweatshirt got in the Nissan, apparently unaware the girl was in the back seat, and started to drive away. The mother grabbed on to the trunk of the Nissan, while the child managed to jump from the moving car, police said.
The mother remained on the trunk as the man continued driving before eventually pulling into a business in the 1100 block of East Ledbetter and stopped, police said.
The man then got out of the vehicle and assaulted the mother while demanding money. She surrendered her cash and the carjacker fled on foot, police said.
Both the girl and the mother were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. The mother suffered serious road rash to her legs and the daughter had minor injuries to the palms of her hands and her knees.
